Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie & Chevrolet

Motorbooks.com
The Workshop Edition

September 2011

Dear ASD,
American-made automobiles are back! And cars made by General Motors have jumped to the front of the line. Consumer Reports rated the Corvette Z06 the best American-made car this year, while the Chevy Avalanche LT took overall honors in the American-made pickup category. But whatever type of vehicle you drive, we have a book to detail its history or help keep it running in tip-top shape.

Check out our full line of Chevrolet-related titles to see how the brand became the heartbeat of America.

Watch for our continuing series on car marques. Over the next several weeks we'll feature books about many of the world's most popular automakers. In the meantime, drive on over to Motorbooks and search for books about your favorite car, truck or motorcycle today.
Five Generations of Performance
CamaroAfter a few years hiatus, the Camaro is again in the spotlight and Camaro: Five Generations of Performance chronicles the rich history of an American muscle car era icon. This is the full story of Camaro's forty-plus years, accompanied by fabulous photographs of the models that made history.

Beginning with Chevrolet's race to capture the emerging youth market in the 1960s, the book follows the company's efforts to devise a car that would out-muscle the Mustang. The Camaro was that car, and in the years after its 1967 introduction, it set some of the most important performance marks in American automotive history. From the classics of the muscle-car era like the RS, SS, Z/28, and IROC-Z to the models that jump-started a new era of American performance in the 1980s, all of Camaro's greatest hits are detailed.

In flashing color and fine detail, Camaro captures the innovations and fierce competition as well as the changes in style and technology that make the story of this legendary car a part of the American automotive story.
Restore an Original
Corvette 1968-1982 Restoration Guide
While the Corvette Z06 may be the best-made American car on the road today, there are plenty of drivers out there who prefer the classics.

Third generation Corvettes (1968-1982), commonly known as C3s, are among the most plentiful and affordable Corvettes on the road today. Production spanned 15 years with more than 540,000 examples built, making these the most common of any Corvette body style. Unfortunately, many have fallen into disrepair and are in need of restoration.

Corvette 1968-1982 Restoration Guide, Second Edition will delve into all of the idiosyncrasies of the C3's engine, drive train, body, chassis, and interior to guide both first time and experienced restorers to a successful conclusion of their project.

The book:
- Features tips to ensure correct restoration
- Covers every major component
- Decodes stampings and part numbers
- Includes accessory codes and production numbers

With this book and a heated garage, you can have your C3 ready to show off by spring driving season next year!

America's Team
Breakthrough 'Boys The famous Chevy slogan touted baseball, hot dogs and apple pie, but football season is now in full swing. And when Chevy used that slogan, the Dallas Cowboys were America's team.

It wasn't always that way. During the late 1960s, the Cowboys were known as the team that couldn't win the big one, getting close to the top but failing to seal the deal. They were perpetually "next year's champions."

That all changed in 1971 when the Boys rallied to capture their first-ever title and put the franchise on its way to becoming "America's Team." In Breakthrough 'Boys, Jaime Aron gets the inside stories from former players, coaches, and other key figures to explore the fascinating and tumultuous road the Cowboys took to their first championship 40 years ago under coach Tom Landry. Eight years after the assassination of JFK and seven years before the arrival of J.R. Ewing, this team gave the city of Dallas the new identity it needed and changed the face of football.

How To Make Your Car Last Forever

Author Tom Torbjornsen is a car repair expert and host of satellite radio show America's Car Show with Tom Torbjornsen. He has seen it all in his 40 years in the automobile industry. Let him show you how to extend the life of your car indefinitely as he explains the what, when, and why of automotive maintenance and repair in easy-to-understand terms. Simple projects supplement the learning with step-by-step instructions that will save you time and money.

The Bible for Welders
How to Weld Welding is a skill that any do-it-yourself enthusiast needs in his arsenal. It's only when you can join metal that you can properly repair and create. This book is the perfect introduction for neophytes and an excellent refresher for veteran welders, a work so comprehensive and so complete that most readers won't need any further instruction.

How to Weld starts with a brief history of welding, an overview of the different types of welding, and a thorough discussion of safety practices. Longtime welding instructor Todd Bridigum describes various tools and types of metals, as well as techniques and types of joints. Bridigum discusses gas, stick, wire-feed (MIG and TIG), even brazing, completing each section with a series of exercises that fully illustrate the skills he has covered.
Never Be Late for School Again
Jet Powered School Bus There were plenty of modified cars, trucks and motorcycles at this year's Wheels & Wings show, but none of them quite matched the panache of this school bus that was clocked doing up to 367 mph in Lincoln, Nebraska, recently.

Paul Stender custom built the jet-engine-powered dragster using an engine from a McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom fighter jet. The 42,000 hp engine not only propels the bus to high speeds, it belches flames up to 80 feet and billowing clouds of smoke from its tailpipe. The bus isn't exactly fuel efficient. It gobbles 150 gallons of fuel over a quarter-mile run. Stender is a sprint car racer and mechanic who built and raced his first jet-powered cars in 1995.

Interested in a book on more practical buses? Check out Crown Coach Corp.: School Buses, Fire Trucks and Custom Coaches, an illustrated history of the famous bus manufacturer.

Porsche: The Ultimate Luxury Car

Motorbooks.com
The Porsche Edition

September 2011

Dear ASD,
I remember the first time I saw a Porsche. I was just a kid and didn't know much about cars at the time, but I knew the machine I was looking at was something special. The sensuous lines of the body. The luxurious cabin. The purr. I promised myself that one day I would own a car like that.

I'm still working on fulfilling that promise. But in the meantime, I live my dream through the pages of Porsche books. Three of the latest are highlighted below. When you're done with those, look through our library of nearly 110 other Porsche-related books to see why there is no substitute for Porsche.
The Perfect Sports Car
The Complete Book of Porsche 911 Today, Porsche is a household name, a definition of performance combined with luxury and reliability. And when most people think of Porsche, they think of the 911.

The fabled 911 was the ultimate expression of Ferdinand Porsche's original vision for the perfect sports car. The Complete Book of Porsche 911 provides a model-by-model overview for each year of the 911's production, from the original 901 prototype in 1964 to the current models. In addition to production cars, the book includes all of the factory's racing, prototype, and special-production cars illustrated with both current and archival photography. This book is the ultimate single-volume resource for the 911 aficionado.

Sixty Years in the World's Greatest Race
Porsche at Le Mans Not only is the Porsche the perfect sports car, it's a legend on the race track as well. 2011 marks the 60th anniversary of Porsche's participation in the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Porsche at Le Mans celebrates that anniversary and is packed with photos, narrative and data of Porsche's part in the world's greatest motor race. Porsche's first visit to Le Mans was with a singleton entry of a streamlined 356 model, complete with aerodynamic fairings over the wheels. True to the reputation Porsche has established over its long association with the famous endurance race, this 356 ran like clockwork to 20th place, beating the coveted record for the shortest time spent in the pits.

Since then, there have been Porsches entered for every single running of the 24 hours and the models that have taken part add up to a roll call of great sports racing cars: 550 Spyder, 718 RSK, 904, 906, 908, 910, 917, 936, 935, 956, 962 and GT1. And to this list can be added the ubiquitous 911, the privateer's choice for the race; in 1971, a year that saw a record number of Porsches take part, 19 of the 33 Porsches in the race were 911s.

Compiled by a meticulous author with a passion for Porsche, this book provides definitive coverage of the subject, supported by full access to Porsche's archives of photographs, data and technical information.
