The Complete Book of Shelby Automobiles

With Independence Day right around the corner, we can't help but think of those things that are cultural staples here in America. Some may say "American" means apple pie, baseball and the Big Mac. Here at Motorbooks, we think American culture is best represented through the greatest car and racing legends of our time - the best of which is the great Carroll Shelby.

Colin Comer penned a book for us in 2009 that Automobile Magazine called "more readable and coffee-table friendly than the World Registry but still richly detailed enough to serve as a great resource", Keith Martin's Sports Car Market said was "a beautiful book on every level" and Vintage Motorsport said it was "well worth adding this to your Shelby book collection". The Complete Book of Shelby Automobiles: Cobras, Mustangs and Super Snakes was hailed by critics and is more than worthy of another look.

Dear ASD,

The 4th of July is just around the corner. The season of the summer road trip is well underway.

Growing up in rural Minnesota in the 1970s, road trips were the only kind of vacation I knew. The Black Hills of South Dakota. The Wisconsin Dells. Minnesota's North Shore. Once we even went to Chicago. Wow! Those buildings were tall!

Route 66 was too far from home to meet the "no more than a week" vacation criteria Dad set. And I've not had a chance to drive the highway as an adult. But it's a trip that's on my bucket list. And I know the Voyageur Press books by Jim Hinckley will be a great help when I do.
Route 66 Encyclopedia
To help me prepare for the trip, I've just picked up my own copy of The Route 66 Encyclopedia.

An encyclopedia with a twist, this book presents alphabetical entries on Route 66 history, landmarks, personalities, and culture, from Bobby Troup's anthem "Route 66" to The Grapes of Wrath to the Wigwam Motel. It is illustrated with more than 1,000 old and new, color and black-and-white photos and memorabilia.

These pages cover the history of Route 66 and the people who played a role in its transformation from highway to icon between 1926 and the present. It is a reference book for all things Route 66. Plus, it is a time capsule, a travel guide, a history book, a memorial, a testimonial, and a chronicle of almost a century of societal evolution.
Route 66 Treasures
And watch for Route 66 Treasures, coming this September. Like the other Route 66 books, this one will
be filled with nostalgia.

Author Jim Hinckley's unique new look at the road examines it through the lens of vintage promotional and advertising efforts, going so far as to include 15 pieces of fabulous removable facsimile memorabilia-among them diner menus, cocktail napkins, paper coasters, window decals, postcards, brochures, and more-each enclosed in its own vellum envelope. An utterly new look at the Mother Road,  Route 66 Treasures offers a rare collectible archive for the growing hordes of 66 enthusiasts.

Gettysburg at 150 Years

Gettysburg at 150 Years
As we celebrate Independence Day this week, we'll likely watch some fireworks, break out the barbecue and enjoy a parade or a festival. As Americans, we've become used to living in the land of the free.

But 150 years ago, our nation was in the midst of a Civil War, and Independence Day had a much different meaning. In the days leading up to July 4, 1863, one of the bloodiest battles of the war was fought at Gettysburg. Zenith Press has commemorated that battle by taking a unique look at the conflict with a graphic novel.
Gettysburg
Gettysburg author Wayne Vansant uses a graphic format to describe the history leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg, as well as all of the major military events on the first three days of July 1863, including the famous fight for Little Round Top on the second day and the death march known as Pickett's Charge on the third and final day. He paints portraits of each army's leaders, such as Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, George Meade, and the then little-known Joshua Chamberlain.

Critics agree that the tale is well told:

"Gettysburg is a brilliant achievement. Rich in drama, accurately detailed, this is a benchmark addition to the historiography of the bloodiest battle in the American Civil War.  - Dwight Jon Zimmerman, #1 New York Times bestselling co-author of Lincoln's Last Days

"Vansant makes you feel as if you are walking alongside leaders, both little known and well known. If all you know about Gettysburg is Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, it's time to learn what the turning point of the Civil War was all about." - Examiner.com

"In short, Vansant did his homework.  Gettysburg is an excellent choice for introducing younger readers to the battle, with information presented in an exciting manner within a format they are more likely to accept. It is a worthwhile read for anyone wanting an overview of the crisis at the crossroads. And for old grognards like myself, it can remind us of why we got interested in history in the first place." - ArmchairGeneral.com
