In 1986, Chuck Yeager

Mike Mueller, author of The Complete Book of Corvette, explains why, in 1986, Chevrolet built over 7,000 street-going versions of their Indianapolis 500 pace car.

The new convertible became the second Corvette to pace the Indianapolis 500, and Chevrolet that year was more than proud that its two-seater again (like its 1978 forerunner) needed no special engineering modifications to help bring Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan, Michael Andretti, and the rest up to speed. Save for the safety conscious strobe lights, five-point harness, and onboard fire system, the yellow, 230-horsepower ragtop that led the pace lap on May 31, 1986, was basically identical to all other '86 Corvette convertibles sold to the public.

Retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Chuck Yeager, a man familiar with setting the pace, was the celebrity driver in 1986. Yeager, of course, was the first man to surpass the speed of sound, that achievement coming in October 1947. Flying much lower and slower, Bobby Rahal won the Indy 500 in May 1986.

Dear ASD,
Auto Paint from Prep to Final Coat
Solvent-based paints have been used in automotive applications since the days when automobiles were called "buggies" and the horsepower was provided by, well, horses. But in recent years, EPA regulations have restricted solvent-based paints for use only in approved professional paint booths, meaning that do-it-yourselfers can no longer use them - and it won't be long before their use is banned entirely.

Paint manufacturers have raced to develop water-based paints as a replacement for the solvent-based paints previously used. These new water-based automotive paints are of very high quality, but they require different methods and techniques for proper application, virtually rendering previous automotive paint books obsolete.
Automotive Paint from Prep to Final Coat is the first book to provide instruction in these new paints. In addition to providing this critical information, author and top professional painter JoAnn Bortles covers all the techniques necessary to get the great results your car deserves. From initial body-panel preparation, to troubleshooting common problems, to applying the final coat and all steps in between, this book is the only reference you will need to ensure your DIY automotive paint job is done right the first time.

1965 427 Shelby Cobra

One of the wildest vehicles ever unleashed onto American roads, the 1965 427 Cobra used brute force in lieu of finesse. Ostensibly rated at 390 horsepower, it could generate 500-plus horsepower with ease. It was definitely not a car for beginners. Randy Leffingwell, author of Shelby Mustang, gives us more details on this breathtaking car.

  • The 1965 427 Cobra was a thinly disguised race car with a license plate. Sealed-beam headlights allowed the Cobra to be seen, period.
  • Unwary occupants stood a good chance of searing their legs on the huge exhaust pipes, and the exhaust note played havoc with their hearing. The roll bar provided a modicum of protection in case of a rollover, but most drivers didn't worry.
  • With the huge 427-cubic-inch engine in the bow, rapid handling was not the big-block Cobra's forte. It was more at home on a long straight stretch, where the brutish engine could wind up.

Dear ASD,
Jeep
Few American vehicles, or vehicles made anywhere else in the world for that matter, are as universally iconic as the Jeep. From olive drab WWII military relics to the beloved Wrangler with its rear-mounted spare tire, open-air design, and telltale roll cage, the Jeep is a true classic. Here is the definitive, fully illustrated celebration of an auto manufacturer that paved its own way by going off-road.

Automotive writer Patrick R. Foster chronicles over 70 years of Jeep vehicle design and production in Motorbooks' latest release, Jeep: The History of America's Greatest Vehicle. Beginning with the Jeep as a crucial component of the American World War II fleet, Foster expertly recounts the corporate shifts, financial struggles and successes, close calls, and, above all, the enduring machines that have carried Jeep from the early 1940s to its triumphant role as a modern-day embodiment of American perseverance. Three hundred color and black-and-white historical photos complement his expertly written narrative of Jeep's entire history, reminding us that sometimes, the road less traveled was just waiting for the right truck.

The book just arrived in our warehouse last week. Order now, and get your copy for just $33.75. That's 25% off the list price of $45.
