1965 Chevrolet Z16 Chevelle Malibu SS396

Darwin Holmstrom, author of  Top Muscle, explains some of the background of this gorgeous Chevelle.

According to the Chevrolet Engineering Vehicle Assignment List, this car was built in Baltimore with a 327-cubic-inch engine in the third week of December 1964. It was one of two Z16s built prior to the production run. The second pilot car is not believed to have survived. All other production Z16s were built in Kansas City, Missouri, beginning in late February. This example was sent to Chevrolet Engineering in Warren, Michigan, and issued to Alfred Laskowski, who was most likely a Chevrolet employee. The Vehicle Assignment List reference number of 56091 is written on the cover of the warranty book, as are several other unidentified numbers. This number is also written inside the trunk lid.

Dear ASD,

In the 1960s, something explosive happened in the automotive world: the United States' evolving V-8 engine technology was met by 75 million baby boomers, all with an extreme need for speed and all entering the auto market at the same time. The result was the golden era of factory muscle cars.

But for some, even a factory muscle car wasn't enough. Detroit automakers responded, secretly building outrageous muscle cars behind their superiors' backs and ultimately creating some of the most powerful vehicles ever sold to the public.
Top Muscle
In the just-released Top Muscle, author Darwin Holmstrom chronicles the ultimate collection of these super-rare high-performance beasts. The book is available at Motorbooks.com now for just $37.50.

Captured by the lens of renowned auto photographer Randy Leffingwell, these cars represent the absolute zenith of the most valuable collector cars in existence, with fascinating histories that illuminate the wildest age in American automotive history.

The Brothers Collection features over 600 cars, including such rarities as:
  • The very first Chevelle Z16 ever built, which was also the very first muscle car that Chevrolet ever built
  • The very first Chevelle SS454 LS6 off the assembly line
  • The only 1969 Mach I Mustang ever built with a factory sunroof
  • The very first A12 (440-6) Roadrunner ever built
  • The very last Hemi 'Cuda convertible Plymouth produced
  • One of the eight convertible Trans Am Ram Air III Firebirds that Pontiac built in 1969
Take a look at these beautiful machines. And dream of a time that truly embodied the "sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll" generation.

John Morton, author of  Inside Shelby American, shares a story of a quick trip to the airport and a wild idea he cooked up with a friend.

Back at the shop, shortly after Earl's Riverside victory, Earl, Allen Grant, and I were given the job of driving to Los Angeles International Airport and picking up four Cobra Coupes. They had arrived from Europe on a Slick Airways DC6. All four of them were painted in the old Viking Blue team color. One of them appeared to be brand new and not quite finished. Another was the stretched one that had been built to accept a big-block engine. The nose was damaged but it had not been run. The three of us picked out a car and posed with it pretending, "This is the car I'm going to be driving," as Dave Friedman took our picture to prove our claims.
