Barn Find Road Trip
Barn-Find Road Trip!

I can't help it; I look for cars when I'm driving to buy milk, while on vacation with my family, even while I'm driving to funerals! Looking for old cars is just part of my DNA, I guess.

I don't know what it is, but I seem to have a sixth sense about places where interesting old cars might be hiding. A house or a business that has old cars hidden usually has a certain look about it, and often, I can easily pick out those locations.

I've often wondered: If I were dropped off at a location where I've never been before, could I locate an interesting old car within four hours? Two hours? 30 minutes?

Could I locate an old car if I was under the gun?

In all the years I've been searching and writing about old cars, I have not met anyone else who has as keen an eye... until recently. My friend Brian Barr can pick a needle out of a haystack. Or at least a car out of a farm field. Or behind a body shop. Or sitting behind a house.

Dear ASD,
50 Shades of Rust
Motorbooks' BARN FIND ROAD TRIP starts on Friday, September 26, when Tom Cotter and his trusty barn find spotters, Brian Barr and Michael Alan Ross begin a journey that will end October 10 at the 2014 AACA Fall Meet in Hershey, PA. We need your tips!

If you live in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland or Pennsylvania and know of a collector car awaiting discovery in a barn, behind a shed or in the woods, tell us about it! Your barn find could be featured in Tom Cotter's upcoming book!

Use Hashtag: #BarnFindRoadTrip

If you see Tom, Brian and Michael in their Woody along the way, take a picture and share with us! #BeACotterSpotter

And while you're watching for them, take a look through Tom's latest book, 50 Shades of Rust. You can pick up a copy today at Motorbooks.com for just $24.

Installing an Aftermarket Shift Knob
One of the most popular and easiest upgrades for your car is the addition of an aftermarket shift knob. Let's face it, the steering wheel, gauges, and shift knob are the three main items on the car that you have a personal interaction with. Why not spruce them up a bit? I personally find the Carrera original equipment manufacturer (OEM) shift knob in particular to be quite boring. The shift knob I chose for this article is the MOMO Shadow carbon fiber, available for about $90 from PelicanParts.com. I also used a black MOMO Endurance shift boot and the Endurance finishing knob that attaches to the bottom of the shifter. Installation takes about two hours, as you need to remove the shifter from the car (unless you have the short shift kit installed).

Dear ASD,
Art of the Locomotive
From the steam age to the modern diesel era, locomotives are marvels of engineering and industrial design, brimming with power, movement, and man's ingenuity even when sitting still.

Photographer
Ken Boyd's approach to the locomotive is unlike that of any other photographer. Every aspect of his photographs, from bolts and conduits to sheet metal and windows is painstakingly evaluated and then digitally edited until it glows with clarity and brilliance. The results are images of locomotives bristling with details not visible in conventional locomotive photography.

The Art of the Locomotive features 150 large-format plates depicting locomotives ranging from the diminutive steam engines of the middle nineteenth century to the steam and diesel behemoths that followed. Each plate is accompanied by a detailed caption describing the locomotive's history and technology. The machines included represent railroads from all over the United States and Canada, from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf of Mexico, from the east Coast to the West Coast. In addition, Boyd offers an appendix describing his photographic process, shedding light, as it were, on the method behind his fantastic imagery. Boyd's images are so incredibly sharp and breathtakingly rich, they have to be seen to be believed.

Order your copy today. The hardcover volume is just $40 at Motorbooks.com.
