The Secret Life of a Snowflake
Today Only:
The Secret Life of a Snowflake
Kindle Version Just $2.99 at Amazon

Before a snowflake melts on your tongue, it makes an epic journey. This is the beautiful, full-color story of that journey, step by step, from a single snowflake's creation in the clouds, through its fall to earth, to its brief and sparkling appearance on a child's mitten. Told by a scientist who knows snowflakes better than almost anyone, the story features his brilliant photographs of real snowflakes, snowflakes forming (in the author's lab), water evaporating, clouds developing, ice crystals, rain, dew, and frost--all the elements of the world and weather that add up, flake by flake, to the white landscape of winter. Aimed at readers from 6 to 12, The Secret Life of a Snowflake gets to the heart of one of nature's most magical phenomena while making the wonder of the snowflake all the more real.

Today only (October 28), the Kindle version of this book is available at Amazon.com for just $2.99. Don't miss this great price on a beautiful book about the season just ahead.

Our Top Pick
Pizza: A Slice of American History tells the story of how this beloved food became the apple of our collective eye--or, perhaps more precisely, the pepperoni of our pie. Pizza journalist Liz Barrett explores how it is that pizza came to and conquered North America and how it evolved into different forms across the continent. Each chapter investigates a different pie: Chicago's famous deep-dish, New Haven's white clam pie, California's health-conscious varieties, New York's Sicilian and Neapolitan, the various styles that have emerged in the Midwest, and many others. The components of each pie - crust, sauce, spices, and much more - are dissected and celebrated, and recipes from top pizzerias provide readers with the opportunity to make and sample the pies themselves. Illustrated throughout with modern and historical photographs, postcards, and memorabilia, Pizza: A Slice of American History is the most comprehensive and fun cultural history of pizza in the USA ever written.

In 50 Shades of Rust, Mitch Goldstein shares the moment that this baby roared back to life.

"If it wasn't one of only 117 Series I Vixens made (VX199F), you would take one look at it and call it a parts car. It had been running when parked, but the engine was still free, so I dropped a battery in it and cranked it over. After a couple of minutes of cranking, the oil pressure came up."

Rick Schunk, author of How to Rebuild and Restore Classic Harley-Davidson Big Twins 1936-1964, shares a quick tip for replacing hard-to-find taillights.

Harley used four taillights: From 1936 to 1938, the taillight was known as the cross; from 1939 to 1946, Harley featured the beehive style; from 1947 to 1954, the classic tombstone was introduced. A rectangular light was used from 1955 to 1964, and it used a glass lens. Later, Harley produced it in plastic. Complete reproduction taillights are available for all styles, although the quality is a bit lacking.

Our Favorite New Title

Photographer David Blattel treats every photo shoot as a work of art. When his subjects are the works of art produced by the motorcycling maestros from Milwaukee, the results are doubly beautiful. Art of the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle pulls together the best of Blattel's Harley-Davidson portraiture - over 100 stunning machines - resulting in a breathtaking review of Harley-Davidson's greatest hits from the early 1900s to today. Harley-Davidson expert Dain Gingerelli puts each machine in historical and technical context with informed profiles. The result is a handsome, informative overview of Harley-Davidson's 100-plus years of style and innovation. This deluxe edition sports a special leather-look cover, poster-sized gatefolds, and frameable garage art in an internal envelope.
