In Celebration of a Life Well Lived: Carroll Shelby, Cobra Creator and American Racing Icon Last week, the auto industry lost a legend. Carroll Shelby, a leader in the development of performance automobiles, died May 11 in Dallas, Texas. He was 89. A chicken farmer turned race car driver, Shelby brought the Cobra to the race tack and the Mustang pony car to the streets. His influence on auto design and racing spanned more than five decades.
