One of history's preeminent automotive sculptors and engineers passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013. Dean Jeffries, also known as "Deano," began pinstriping cars with the legendary Von Dutch in Lynwood, California, in the early 1950s. His pinstriping work lead him into custom painting, and later into custom fabrication.

Jeffries started his craft in Lynwood before moving to Sunset Boulevard, then to his long-time shop on Cahuenga Boulevard in North Hollywood. He fabricated some of the most innovative custom cars and hot rods of all time, famously painting the words "Little Bastard" on the tail section of actor James Dean's Porsche. Other stars that would visit his shop included Gary Cooper, Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Jay Leno.

Dear ASD,

The Indy 500 is just a week away. For many, it's the premier American race of the year.

That was the case for Dean Jeffries, who was one of the best automotive fabricators and engineers in history. Jeffries loved the Indy 500. In fact, one year he painted 22 of the 33 cars in the field. Dean passed away May 5. He'll be missed at this year's race.

But, as it has for more than 100 years, the race will go on.
Autocourse Official Illustrated History of the Indianapolis 500
We're looking forward to  Autocourse Official Illustrated History of the Indianapolis 500, the upcoming book by Icon Publishing Co. that chronicles the mystique of the time-honored institution with a glorious history dating back more than one hundred years. This updated second edition will publish in September and features a tribute to driver Dan Wheldon.

Steeped in tradition, "The 500" has meant many things to many people and has played an enormous role in the lives of many, perhaps even more so for the spectators and devotees than for the participants themselves.

This is the story of the Indianapolis 500 and how it came to be. This is the story of more than 100 editions of the race, interspersed with a look at some of the compelling personalities, some little-known facts, an attempt to document the origins of some of the traditions, and perhaps even to dispel a few myths.

Enjoy this year's race!
