Soul on Bikes

It's obvious from the first few words in any of my books about the motorcycle club culture that my love, loyalty and respect for this lifestyle has the power and strength of a 110-inch screamer. I've also made it a crusade to accentuate the positives in MC life, and that's because there is so much that is positive. I take that tone because there is a non-stop spew of material that heads in the other direction. The mainstream media loves to focus on the overboard excitement and the extremes, like Sons of Anarchy's "ruthless and illegal arms business driven by the seduction of money, power, and blood," as touted by its network, FX.

Yep, there's a typical day around the ol' clubhouse.

But I do need to be honest. I've continually said that this way of life is not populated by birdwatchers and those fellows who make clothes on Project Runway. This is an alpha-male culture at its alpha-most. The whole thing was begun by war veterans back in the 1940s and it still has a military-might background.

Dear ASD,

When you think of motorcycle clubs, African American bikers aren't top of mind. But this club in Oakland, California, isn't your average group.
Soul on Bikes The East Bay Dragons Motorcycle Club has gunned its Harleys through the meanest streets of Oakland since the 1950s. Before Rosa Parks took her historic bus ride and before Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Huey P. Newton and the Black Panthers stood bravely for equal rights, the East Bay Dragons MC risked life and limb during the days when it was a revolutionary act for a black man to ride a Harley chopper. Written by Tobie Levingston, the club's original founder, Soul on Bikes offers a slice of underground American and African-American history you're unlikely to read in any textbook. Levingston and his colorful cast of misfits and comrades are an all-black, all-Harley, all-chopper group of motorcyclists who have found more than their fair share of violence and redemption on the battlegrounds of urban America-and their legacy is an important untold portion of African-American history. Soul on Bikes recounts the club's adventures with humor, attitude, and, most important, soul.
