| | MOTORBOOKS BLOG | Mike Mueller, author of The Complete Book of Corvette, explains why, in 1986, Chevrolet built over 7,000 street-going versions of their Indianapolis 500 pace car. The new convertible became the second Corvette to pace the Indianapolis 500, and Chevrolet that year was more than proud that its two-seater again (like its 1978 forerunner) needed no special engineering modifications to help bring Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan, Michael Andretti, and the rest up to speed. Save for the safety conscious strobe lights, five-point harness, and onboard fire system, the yellow, 230-horsepower ragtop that led the pace lap on May 31, 1986, was basically identical to all other '86 Corvette convertibles sold to the public. Retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Chuck Yeager, a man familiar with setting the pace, was the celebrity driver in 1986. Yeager, of course, was the first man to surpass the speed of sound, that achievement coming in October 1947. Flying much lower and slower, Bobby Rahal won the Indy 500 in May 1986. |
| | Solvent-based paints have been used in automotive applications since the days when automobiles were called "buggies" and the horsepower was provided by, well, horses. But in recent years, EPA regulations have restricted solvent-based paints for use only in approved professional paint booths, meaning that do-it-yourselfers can no longer use them - and it won't be long before their use is banned entirely.
Paint manufacturers have raced to develop water-based paints as a replacement for the solvent-based paints previously used. These new water-based automotive paints are of very high quality, but they require different methods and techniques for proper application, virtually rendering previous automotive paint books obsolete. Automotive Paint from Prep to Final Coat is the first book to provide instruction in these new paints. In addition to providing this critical information, author and top professional painter JoAnn Bortles covers all the techniques necessary to get the great results your car deserves. From initial body-panel preparation, to troubleshooting common problems, to applying the final coat and all steps in between, this book is the only reference you will need to ensure your DIY automotive paint job is done right the first time. The book just arrived in our warehouse last week.
