| | | MOTORBOOKS BLOG | Randy Leffingwell, author of Shelby Mustang, traces the evolution of these powerful cars in 1967, when styling broke the rules and engines got bigger. While Shelby diminished and decreased some of the race-car characteristics from the new cars, he shrewdly installed features that restored the sensation of race cars. Shelby welded a roll bar to the floor pan in the fastbacks and attached to it a pair of inertia-reel-fed shoulder harnesses that supplemented Ford's standard lap belt. Federal safety regulations required over-the-shoulder across-the chest clip-in belts, but Shelby deleted these to add vertical belts that split behind the driver or front passenger's neck and attached at the sides of the seat.
