The question: Would Pat Foster be interested in writing a new history of American Motors? Well, does the Pope like to say his prayers? Is Paris a city? Does a bear sh... well, you get the idea. Once we got the money part worked out, my answer was an emphatic "Yes."
Inevitably, one of the first things people asked me when I told them about the new book project was, "What are you going to do differently this time?" See, I wrote my first book about twenty years ago, and it too was a history of American Motors. So although a lot of time has passed, their concern was valid. But when I began to envision the new book, I thought about the many new things I'd learned about AMC in the past two decades: all the new, previously unknown facts about the company; all the details, secret plans, unknown prototypes, etc. And I knew the public deserved to hear about them, to learn more about AMC than they ever thought possible.  |
