| | | | | | MOTORBOOKS BLOG | Much has been written about McLaren driver James Hunt and the incredible 1976 F1 championship year. But what about his car, the McLaren M23? Revised 1973 race regulations required fuel tanks to be protected by new deformable structures. To meet requirements, Gordon Coppuck of McLaren designed a wedge-shaped body with integral sidepods called the M23. In its debut race at the 1973 South African GP, the M23 was driven by New Zealander Denny Hulme, who led from his first pole position and finished 5th after an incredible drive back from 19th place on lap 10. In the Swedish GP, the M23 picked up its first race win. At the end of the 1973 season, McLaren finished third in the Constructors' title behind Lotus and Tyrrell. |
