The People Who Make It Happen

The People Edition

October 2011

Dear ASD,
The beautiful lines of a sports car. The unbelievable feats on the race track. The amazing collections of cars, trucks or motorcycles. As gearheads, there's so much we admire. But most fascinating of all are the people behind all these things. We want to know about the inspiration behind a sleek design, the training necessary to tame the track and the dedication (and, let's face it, the money) needed to maintain a fleet of classic cars.

The Motorbooks library features a shelf loaded with biographies and autobiographies of people who made the automobile industry what it is today. Some of the most exciting reads are the biographies of motor sports heroes in our sports biography section.

If you're not looking for a biography, we have plenty of titles to keep a gearhead happy. Drive on over to Motorbooks and search for books about your favorite car, truck or motorcycle today.
A Passion for Speed
Steve McQueen: A Passion for Speed

Even 30 years after his death, Steve McQueen remains an icon of cool. His image continues to appear in advertising and pop culture, and car, motorcycle, and racing fans embrace him as one of their own. Now comes this volume featuring rare photography and chronicling McQueen's fascination with and passion for all things internal-combustion powered.

McQueen's movie characters always had a great motorcycle or car-from the 650cc "BMW" motorcycle (a disguised Triumph) in The Great Escape (1963) to the Gulf Porsche 917 race car he raced in Le Mans (1971). His need for speed propelled him from Hollywood into a number of top off-road motorcycle races, including the Baja 1000, Mint 400, and Elsinore Grand Prix. Determined to be ahead of the pack, McQueen trained vigorously, weight lifting, running, and studying martial arts. Steve McQueen: A Passion for Speed reflects a life lived in the moment and with the pedal to the metal.
A Giant of a Man
Memories of Senna
Racing fans will never forget Aryton Senna. Senna was more than a great racing driver: he was a giant of a man who, 17 years after his death, is still mourned as no sportsman has ever been.

Much has been written about him, but Memories of Senna approaches the subject with a powerfully different focus. More than 120 people who knew him, worked with him and competed against him were asked a single question: What is your strongest memory of Senna? The result, told entirely in direct quotes, stands as an intimate, heartfelt portrait of the man, from his early days as a karter to his death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.

Previously published as Aryton Senna: The Legend Grows, this book has been reformatted in conjunction of the highly acclaimed documentary movie, Senna, which appeared in limited release earlier this year.

Be the first to receive this book. It will be shipping from our warehouse beginning December 1.
The Story Continues
Jorge Lorenzo: My Story So Far Jorge Lorenzo is the hottest racer on two wheels!

Now 24, Lorenzo made his championship debut on his 15th birthday on the second qualifying day for the 2002 125cc Spanish Grand Prix, after having to miss practice rounds because he was not yet old enough to race. He's been amazing the motorcycle world ever since.

Lorenzo really came of age in 2010 when he took the MotoGP season by storm and became the runaway World Champion. He won nine of the season's 18 races, finishing on the podium 16 times and accumulating the highest points total ever achieved in the championship. And he finally toppled teammate Valentino Rossi's domination.

Here, then, is the third edition of Jorge Lorenzo: My Story So Far, a quirky, insightful and highly readable autobiography, updated to cover the 2010 season in full.
Driven by Desire
Driven by Desire Driven by Desire is the story of the driver rated by many as the best woman ever to race cars, and the most capable ever to have driven in Formula One. Desiré Wilson's 50-year career began at the age of five in South Africa, before moving to Holland and England and then to the U.S. She was the first woman to win an F1 race when she won Brands Hatch in the British Aurora F1 series in 1980.

This fascinating story shows that a woman can, and did, fight her way to the top of motorsports.

A Behind-the-Scenes Hero
Sir William Lyons Not all of the best stories are about the heroes that we watch with amazement. Some of them are about the people behind the scenes. Sir William Lyons: The Official Biography is one such story.

Much has been written about Jaguar, but this is the first full biography of its founder, Sir William Lyons, now published in paperback to mark the 110th anniversary of Lyons' birth.

This inspiring book, written by two eminent Jaguar authors, describes how Lyons established his motor manufacturing business and launched the Jaguar marque - and then masterminded decades of glory. This is the fascinating story of a man whose life was inseparable from his cars.
