MOTORBOOKS BLOG
Building a Motorcycle Seat Pan
This blog follows up on my May 2013 entry in which my student Drew built a beautiful aluminum motorcycle fairing from scratch. With the new fairing mounted on the bike, Drew was anxious to replace the misshapen lump of foam and duct tape that comprised the original seat as soon as possible. Once he had identified the ideal rearward location for his posterior, Drew built a simple wire outline of the shape of his intended seat pan as if it were seen from the side. He cut a piece of aluminum for the base of the pan and bent it around a piece of pipe to create the upward curvature it needed.

For the deep rearmost portion of the seat pan, Drew stretched a large piece of aluminum by hammering it into a shot bag. Shrinking the edges of the same piece, with thumbnail shrinking dies mounted in a Dake power hammer, pulled the edges of the panel up tight in relation to the deeply crowned center. Drew made the piece oversize so that it would be easy to trim in relation to the bottom of the pan.
