Building a Better Garage

Have you ever dreamed of dropping it all and heading out in pursuit of your passion? Peter Cinvent, photographer and author of Hot Rod Garages, shares the story of Roy Brizio's of Roy Brizio Street Rods. His success is built upon hard work and knowing his clients as well as he knows his cars.

Roy grew up in a hot rod family. His dad, Andy "The Rodfather" Brizio, ran a hot rod business during the 1960s that specialized in T-bucket chassis. He also ran the Champion Speed Shop in South San Francisco, where Roy worked the counter and developed an ever-increasing passion for hot rods. Andy sold the T-bucket business in 1976, and the following year Roy decided to open his own business at 21 years of age.

To survive the early years, Roy parted out a 1932 three-window, first selling the car's 4-71 blower, then its small-block Chevy, and eventually the fenders and the chassis. The body was the last part to go. Roy sold it to Boyd Coddington.

Dear ASD,

It's been a rough winter for driving all over the country. Heavy snows, lots of ice and flooding rains have made driving treacherous. Treacherous driving leads to fender benders.

We hope your winter has been accident free, but if you're looking for help fixing a dent or worse, our Motorbooks Workshop series is here to help.
How to Weld
How to Weld is our best-selling auto repair book, and if you have a garage workshop, you should really have that book.

Welding is a skill that any do-it-yourself enthusiast needs in his arsenal. It's only when you can join metal that you can properly repair and create. This book is the perfect introduction for neophytes and an excellent refresher for veteran welders, a work so comprehensive and so complete that most readers won't need any further instruction.

How to Weld starts with a brief history of welding, an overview of the different types of welding, and a thorough discussion of safety practices. Longtime welding instructor Todd Bridigum describes various tools and types of metals, as well as techniques and types of joints. Bridigum discusses gas, stick, wire-feed (MIG and TIG), even brazing, completing each section with a series of exercises that fully illustrate the skills he has covered.
