Stuart Codling, author of Art of the Le Mans Race Car: 90 Years of Speed, explains that a car not specifically designed to race beat the odds in 1995.

On March 8, 1990, a handpicked group of automotive engineers sat around a table in an industrial unit on Albert Drive, Woking, and began to plan the world's fastest and most exclusive road car. Little did they know that the car they would create-one that was never intended to go racing-would claim an unexpected victory in an epic installment of the world's greatest motor race.

"We never set out to build a racing car when we designed the F1. It was pretty incredible to-in effect-put a rear wing on it, go racing and win. If someone gave me the brief again I'd do it the same, even the styling."
