As we celebrate Independence Day this week, we'll likely watch some fireworks, break out the barbecue and enjoy a parade or a festival. As Americans, we've become used to living in the land of the free.

But 150 years ago, our nation was in the midst of a Civil War, and Independence Day had a much different meaning. In the days leading up to July 4, 1863, one of the bloodiest battles of the war was fought at Gettysburg.
